Do You Trick or Treat?

According to my boys I am right now possibly the worst mummy in the world.

Actually loads of reasons but mainly because I won’t let them go trick or treating.

My reasons?

The reason I give them is that they would essentially knocking on complete strangers doors and accepting things from them. We know nothing about the people and we have no idea whether the things they would be giving them had been tampered with in any way. At no other time of the year would I allow them to approach complete strangers and accept things from them.

As a sort of pay off, I have however bought some fireworks for next weekend.

Am I a complete killjoy? Do you allow trick or treating?

You are not a kill joy! I hate Halloween & really worry about children’s safety if they are allowed to go off on their own. I still find it hard that we celebrate something that terrifies kids!

We always try to instill in our children during assemblies at school that they should only go with an adult and only to pre-arranged houses. Both for their safety and to prevent upsetting other people. How much attention they pay is another matter…!

Definitely not a killjoy! Apart from the safety aspect for the kids, it is an intrusion of privacy for many people too, having constant knocks on the door from kids that pay no attention to them the other 364 days a year!

Last year we had two hoodies knock on the door trick or treating – three days early!

Good on you! My 3 never did it or will do either!

When I was growing up in the 70s, in Canada, there were scares of these things happening however it didn’t stop us from Trick or Treating and my mum always checked all our goods.

However, now in the UK we will be Trick or Treating but we live on a friendly street and a group of families on the street are going to meet at one house, then we are going to go around to each others houses trick or treating and then back to one house for some Chilli! I’d suggest if you’re not comfortable with Trick or Treating you could go to an organised event or have one yourself.
